WHY SHOULD A BABA SPEND HIS TIME DISTRIBUTING GIFTS!

Context : Sathya Sai Baba's visit to Kampala, Uganda, during Idi Amin's Rule.

Prof. N. Kasturi, a biographer and close aide of Sathya Sai Baba, wrote in his book "Sathyam Sivam Sumdaram" :


Baba's Presence at Kampala was utilized by many for receiving blessings and counsel. The High Commissioner of India, Shri K.P.R. Singh, the Chief of Staff of the Uganda Army, General Idi Amin, the Minister of Defense, Mr. Onama, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Ojira, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Bataringaya, the Inspector of Police, Mr. Oryema, and other African leaders met Him at Dr. Patel's residence and obtained a glimpse of the Glory of Baba. During His stay He addressed gatherings of lions and rotarians, doctors, businessmen, and members and workers of service organizations. He replied with His natural gentleness, sweetness and sense of humor, even intimate personal questions from those who participated. Towards the close of each of the meetings, He moved among the participants creating and distributing to those around Him portraits in enamel or gold, of Christ for the Christians, Guru Nanak for the Sikhs, Zarathustra for the Parsis, and of Himself for those who yearned for them. He spoke lovingly and for long to a group of students from Makrere University and stood amidst them, when they wanted a photograph with Him.

COUNTERVIEW

We can greatly appreciate the gentleness, humor and sweetness of Sathya Sai Baba. But it is not clear, why he should go on distributing portraits of enamel/gold, Christ for the Christians, Guru Nanak for the Sikhs, Zarathustra for the Parsis.

These things, normally politicians do. Corporates distribute gifts to Government Officials, Leaders occupying seats of power and pelf, and Corporate customers and shareholders. But why should a Baba undertake this salesmanship?

I shall not say that a self-realised soul should stay aloof listening or speaking to anybody. We can agree without any demur that a Baba need not be incommunicado. Should, he at the same time, stoop down to abracadabra?

Whatever the religious and spiritual implications of Sri Satya Sai Baba (SSSB), he did achieve the glory of a Moghal king that ruled India and lived the life of a Paadusha (Badshah). Imagine stashing 11 crores of loose cash in the office room, along with 100 kg gold. By some accounts his personal conduct over the years was no less indulgent. In a way he did restore the glory of moghal kings or close to home their once representative Nizam. Placed in a bank the 15 crores of wealth could be earning about one crore rupees in interest per year. This disclosed wealth seems to be only the tip of the iceberg. 049 We now need 24 Sherlock Holmes

Readers may please recollect that at my blogpost No. #038 here, I wrote that we need a dozen Sherlock Holmes to investigate into the affairs at Puttaparthi. Now, some snakes have come out of the molehills at penugonDa, the seat of Late kALESwar's dwelling (I cannot call it hermitage, because hermitages are supposed to be in thatched huts and not in mansions and palaces). While the brother's wife of Late kALEshwar said that there were suspicious circumstances in his death, kALEshwar's father said that he didn't find any suspicious circumstances in his son's death. The Officials of the Government of Andhra Pradesh claimed that they were acting as per the instructions of their superiors. We do not know what the instructions of their superiors were.
