What were the engagements between them?
I find a number of web sites and blog sites which contain stories of those who had lost substantial sums by donating to Satya Sai Baba.
Some of these stories may be true.
I am unable to sympathise with them for the following reasons:
Rationalists like Late Kovur and Narasimhaiah (former Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University) were campaigning against the untrustworthy activities of Godmen like Sathya Sai Baba.
The donors, particularly the western donors, ignored all the alerts and precautions suggested by the rationalists, and went on donating huge amounts without consulting anybody. The donors, should have at least, consulted the Government of India or the Government of Andhra Pradesh or the Government of Karnataka. The Governments too could have cautioned/guided them on the proper path officially, though privately the Chief Ministers, Governors, the Prime Ministers and the Presidents may have their devotion to God men.
The Government of India, would have officially adopted a rationalist and scientific approach, when asked to render advice.
The donors should have also used the services of the Consulates of their Mother Countries, to check the facts and truth about Indian Godmen.
We have, in law, a doctrine called "Contributory Negligence". The sufferers were not only negligent, but they have also created an atmosphere of unnecessary publicity for Satya Sai Baba. Baba might have used a part of the huge foreign donations to buy Indian politicians, making the matter more complicated. Many State Governments and the Central Government have released huge public funds in the guise of grants to educational institutions and hospitals. They have also extended several tax concessions.
What percentage of foreign donors realise their mistake now? The Government of India should conduct a C.B.I. Inquiry to unearth the truth. But the problem is, the President and the Prime Minister themselves are falling at the fate of a Baba who is nothing but a mortal. Otherwise, why should he join a hospital for treatment and waste for further public funds?
I do not summarily suggest that foreign donors should stop donating. But should they not exercise some caution and be vigilant?
